Do You Need a Car in Zurich?
Moving to Zurich and wondering whether you need a car?
It depends mainly on where you live.
If you live in Zurich city or close to a well-connected train station, you can usually manage very well without a car. If you live further outside the city, have children, travel frequently or need to reach several locations every day, having a car can make life much easier.

A home with a slightly higher rent but excellent public transport can easily be cheaper overall than a cheaper home that requires a car.

Public transport in Zurich
Zurich has an extensive network of trams, buses and trains. For many residents, public transport is the easiest way to get to work, school, appointments and into the city.
The SBB Mobile app is useful throughout Switzerland. For the Zurich region, the ZVV app offers a Check-in Ticket: simply check in before boarding and check out after your journey. The app calculates the appropriate fare automatically.
For occasional travel, this is particularly convenient. If you commute every day, compare your actual costs with a monthly or annual travelcard. The Check-in Ticket does not automatically switch to a monthly pass once your individual journeys become more expensive than an abonnement.

When is a car actually useful?
A car can be particularly useful if you:
live outside Zurich with limited public transport
live far from a train station
have children with activities in different locations
regularly travel to the countryside or mountains
frequently travel to Germany or elsewhere in Switzerland
need a car for work
regularly travel with a dog
For families, having a car is therefore a lifestyle decision rather than a necessity.
Car or public transport: which is faster?
It depends on the time and destination.
During rush hour, public transport can often be faster because traffic into Zurich can be heavy and parking takes additional time.
During school holidays, weekends and trips outside the city, a car is often faster and considerably more convenient, particularly when travelling with children, luggage or a dog.
Parking in Zurich: Blue, White and Yellow Zones
Parking is an important part of the car calculation.
Blue zones
Blue zones are primarily residential street parking areas. Residents can apply for a resident parking permit online. In Zurich, the annual resident parking permit currently costs CHF 300.
White zones
White marked parking spaces are generally paid public parking spaces. The applicable conditions and fees are shown on the parking meter or signage.
Yellow zones
Yellow markings generally indicate reserved areas, for example loading zones, taxi spaces or other specifically designated areas. They are not normal public parking spaces. Always check the signs and road markings before parking.

Mobility or Draiv app: a car when you need one
If you only need a car occasionally, Mobility can be an excellent alternative to ownership.
You book a vehicle when you need it and pay for the time and kilometres you use. It is particularly useful for shopping, appointments, weekend trips and occasional family outings.
The main disadvantage is that the vehicle normally needs to be returned to its designated location.

Car subscriptions: flexibility and predictable monthly costs
A car subscription can be particularly interesting for people moving to Switzerland who want their own car without buying or traditionally leasing one.
Providers such as FlatDrive, Carvolution, CARIFY and Clyde offer different subscription models.
The major advantage is cash flow and flexibility.
Instead of investing a large amount of money into a car, you pay a predictable monthly amount. Depending on the provider and offer, insurance, taxes, registration, service, maintenance and tyres are already included. Parking and fuel or electricity are generally additional costs.
Another advantage is that your mobility can adapt to your lifestyle. Depending on the provider and contract, you can choose different kilometre packages and contract durations. This can be particularly useful if you need a different type of car in summer and winter.
For example, you might use a smaller vehicle for everyday life in Zurich and choose a larger SUV for winter, skiing and family holidays.

What about electric cars?
For everyday driving within Switzerland, an electric car is generally more than sufficient. Switzerland is compact, charging infrastructure is well developed and most journeys can be covered easily with an appropriate charging plan.
But electric does not automatically mean cheaper.
The total cost depends on the vehicle, subscription or financing, insurance, depreciation, charging and mileage. Compare the complete cost rather than assuming that an electric car will always be cheaper than a petrol or diesel vehicle.
Should you buy a car before moving to Switzerland?
If you are moving from Germany, buying a car before the move can be worth considering, particularly if you already know which vehicle you want and understand the Swiss import rules.
But our advice is:
Do not buy a car simply because you are moving to Switzerland.
First determine where you will live and how you will actually use the car.
